The Africa University Clinical Research Centre (AUCRC) is a unit under the College of Health Agriculture & Natural Sciences (CHANS).

Background

AUCRC’s first project was established in 2006 in collaboration with and sponsored by St Jude Children’s Research Hospital (SJCRH) in Memphis, TN, USA. This project involved the set up and establishment of a research centre in preparation for an HIV vaccine trial and lasted for three years.

PAPSE Project

HIV Self Testing Intervention

Implementation science activities: Documenting the acceptability & effectiveness of an HIV Self Testing intervention in a tertiary institution. Improving uptake of HIV testing services among young people through strengthening peer network activities (AU students, Old Mutare youths, Nyadire Teachers’ college).

Ophthalmology examination

Secondary data analysis efforts to establish preliminary trends, largely working with CHANS students:

  • The Hypertension Study: cross-sectional description of the burden of Hypertension based on review of registers in the Mutare city clinics
  • DRStudy: Pattern & determinants of Diabetic Retinopathy among private sector diabetic patients referred for ophthalmology examination in Mutare, Zimbabwe

Previous Engagements

Director of Innovations, Research, Monitoring & Evaluation, John Snow research & Training Inc. (1/2014-12/2017)

Worked on the USAID-funded Maternal & Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) in Zimbabwe – a US $12.6 million, four year project (USG Cooperative agreement) which supported the MOHCC in introducing evidence based integrated Maternal Newborn & Child Health (MNCH) programs, enhancing quality improvement, systems strengthening and developing human capacity across a range of clinical cadres.

Responsible for design and implementation of public health surveys, operational and implementation science research protocols; Supporting the development, pilot & documentation of innovative strategies to improve health system efficiencies; Oversight for the project’s Performance Monitoring Plan & liaison with technical team to inform program decisions; MOHCC engagement & support.

Research Programs Coordinator, AU Clinical Research Centre

Study Coordinator for: A 2-Part, Cross-Sectional, Prospective, and Observational Cohort Study to Estimate HIV Incidence Among Sexually Active Adult Females.

The study had the following achievements acknowledged by the sponsor, International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM)

  1. Retention rate of 94.3% of study participants
  2. 91% Case Report Forms (CRFs) deemed clean data on arrival.
  3. A 3% Quality control (QC) rate per 100 records throughout the whole duration of study.

Community Engagement Award and Floating Trophy in 2011 by sponsor IPM.

Provided Pre-Award services for AUCRC for winning National Institute of Health (NIH) GrantStrengthening Research Administration at Africa University, Zimbabwe, Grant Number: 1G11HD088121 – 01
